Who Wins E3 2008 According to Next-Gen.Biz

Next-Gen.Biz now known as Edge-Online.com has reviewed the Big 3′s E3 2008 Press Conference, and has rated and picked there winner.
#1 Sony: 8/10
“Tretton, I think, reminded us that Sony knows how to deliver good content, and we saw some games that are genuinely innovative and exciting, lead by LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, DC Universe Online (okay, we’ll give it the benefit of the doubt, for now), God of War III and the astonishing MAG.”
#2 Microsoft: 7/10
“What makes Microsoft look strong is a line-up of hardcore games for the near-future that includes Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Resident Evil 5 and Fallout 3. They all impressed the hell out of me during their presentations, although Peter Molyneux might want to take some tips from a kindly sales rep about the difference between features and benefits, and, although Bethesda’s Todd Howard was an excellent host, I didn’t think the Fallout 3 demo showed off the game’s exploration and communication RPGness sufficiently; and the music was plain irritating.”
#3 Nintendo: 6/10
In substance, I thought this was only a fair-to-middling presentation. Wii Music lacks the immediate impact of previous Nintendo E3 stars and doesn’t feel AAA. There was nothing of note from its character franchises (Pokemon bores me rigid). Animal Crossing will, of course, be huge. But it looks exactly as you’d expect an Animal Crossing Wii game to look. The sequel to Wii Sports was spiced up by the Wii MotionPlus gizmo thingy and represents an actual, bona fide innovation. Even so, it seemed like the biggest cheer of the day went to Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, a DS third-party game.

Games with Trophy Support
These are the games we know so far that will support the Trophy system. I loved Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and will be going back to play that game again, before Metal Gear hit in my opinion (DLB) Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune was the best game to hit the Playstation 3.
- Burnout: Paradise
- Buzz! Quiz TV
- LittleBigPlanet
- Motorstorm Pacific Rift
- NBA 09 [PS3]
- NOVASTRIKE
- PAIN
- PixelJunk Eden
- Resistance 2
- SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
- Super Stardust HD
- Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
- Warhawk
Firmware (v.2.40) Walkthrough Part 2: Trophies
Hello again, everyone! Very recently, we demonstrated a major new function enabled in PLAYSTATION 3 firmware v2.40: XMB access in-game. But that’s only part of the story, as the next system software update also introduces the Trophy system to the PS3. This video demonstration shows the system in action.
Super Stardust HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released in June 2007, will be the first game to leverage Trophies and will offer a variety of trophies. Trophy support in Super Stardust HD will be available for first-time users who purchase the game soon after firmware v2.40 is released, while those who previously purchased and downloaded the title will be prompted to install a free patch.
PS3 users can expect to see additional games bringing Trophies support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and compete with friends. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:
- BUZZ! Quiz TV
- LittleBigPlanet
- MotorStorm Pacific Rift
- NBA 09 – PS3
- PAIN
- PixelJunk Eden
- Resistance 2
- SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
- Warhawk
To further emphasize the community aspects of this system software update, the amount of people you can add to your PSN friends list has been doubled, to 100.
The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you’re using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. There are a few more minor enhancements included in this update, once the update is live you’ll be able to read about them here.
Firmware v2.40 will become available for download on July 2nd. We hope you enjoy these much-requested features, and look forward to your feedback.

SCEE: We’re Dedicated To Our First Party Studios, No Problems Here
Following a rumor this morning that Heavenly Sword 2 had gotten the ax, possibly priming developer Ninja Theory for a break away from Sony Europe, Kotaku checked in with SCEE to see if the studio could be undergoing a change of strategy – or whether it might be facing some issues. After all, if what our inside source said about HS 2 is true, then it’d be the third project to get the kibosh recently, after Eight Days and Getaway 3.
“I think it is fair to say that we do not comment on rumour and speculation, especially about games that have never been announced,” said SCEE corporate PR manager Nick Caplin.
Caplin did tell us, though, some detail behind why Eight Days and Getaway 3 were scrapped, and why we oughtn’t worry about SCEE:
“Regarding 8 Days and The Getaway, we review the progress and viability of games on a regular basis taking into account feedback from within WWS [worldwide studios] and all the RHQs [regional headquarters], and at our latest review, felt that the budget and resources required to complete these games could be more beneficial elsewhere.”
Moreover, Caplin said there’s no trouble on the European front. “We are still dedicated to our first-party studios and are very excited about the fantastic exclusive titles coming this year, such as LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2 and Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, as well as some very exciting titles coming in the near future.”
” Please note that LBP, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift and Killzone 2 are all from European studios,” said Caplin.

Microsoft Is Prepared for 2008
Shane Kim and Phil Spencer of Microsoft are excited about this year’s line-up for the Xbox360 with Gears of War 2 and Fable 2 in the pipeline.
Though they admit “it’s easy to look back and go ‘you can’t possibly be as strong’,” referring to last year’s star studded guest list of COD4, Mass Effect and Halo 3.
Spencer and his crew will have to execute in the face of stiff competition. As momentum for the rival PlayStation 3 builds, 2008 is yet another year that the Xbox 360 must be ready for Sony exclusives such as LittleBigPlanet, Gran Turismo 5, Resistance 2 and the recently-released Metal Gear Solid 4. (Not to mention the Wii, whose successful strategy has shot off in a decidedly different direction.)
Unsurprisingly, Spencer is backing Microsoft in the software battle this year, particularly during the ever-important holidays.
“I feel very good about our lineup,” he says. “I think if you look at the inception of the 360 and our contributions at Microsoft Game Studios, this holiday looks to be in my mind another great holiday for us.
“…The lineup that we have both this holiday, and looking into the early concepts and prototypes to come, I think it lines up against any competitive lineup that I see out there.”
