I think the media and gamers alike didn’t expect Sony to announce anything very significant in regards to the video gaming world at CES 2014. That’s what E3 is for right? Well… yeah. However, yesterday Sony broke the rules by quietly dropping two bombs on the gaming world at CES.
During Sony’s CES 2014 conference Andrew House announced the new Playstation streaming service called PlayStation Now. PlayStation Now is based and built on Gaikai technology and will allow users to stream new and old PlayStation titles on various gaming and non gaming devices.
Andrew House announced that PlayStation Now will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 3, Sony Bravia TV’s and Android/iOS based SmartPhones/Tablets. At this time we don’t know what games will be available on the service but Andrew House did announce The Last Of Us and Beyond Two Souls will be playable on Bravia Tv’s at CES so we expect to see those at launch.
A closed beta version of PlayStation Now will start at the end of january with the full launch coming Summer this year.
DLB-Network got the 411 that GameStop will have both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles in stock this weekend. Supplies are limited, and that is to be expected with any hot item. I guess even Santa’s little helpers have limits. So if you are still trying to get one or both of these next gen consoles under your christmas tree, you now have a heads up on where to go. Customers should contact their local GamesStop for availability throughout the weekend.
Sony has started to roll out pre orders for next-gen titles on the Playstation Store. Currently as of today October 16th this only includes Knack and Warframe, currently this feature is only available via the U.S Playstation store. We have no information at this time if and when this feature will be coming to other markets, will keep you posted.
You can find this content by going to SEN Online or via the Playstation Store on your PS3, Click the ‘PS4 Preview’ button to access all the games up for Pre-Order. Knack is up for pre-order at the standard retail price ($59.99) and Warframe is completely free, if you pre-order Warframe from the Playstation Store/SEN Online you get free in-game money and a player skin.
Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios for SCE, explained in detail some more features of the upcoming PlayStation App that’s coming to phones very soon, it’s nice to finally see PlayStation getting a useful application, here are the features:
- It’s an application that anyone can download for free on iOS and Android devices
- There are a variety of things you can do with it. You can connect to your PlayStation profile and send messages — even voice messages — to friends between your smartphone and PS4.
- A friend on PS4 can also send out an invitation for a multiplayer game, which you can then check on the App, and you can also purchase PS4 games from PlayStation Store. Your game will immediately start downloading while you’re away.
- PlayStation App will also offer ‘second screen’ gameplay features on enabled titles. For example, during the TGS presentation Yoshida showed how the app interacts with The Playroom — he drew a picture of Knack on his smartphone’s touch screen, and then pushed it into the PS4 game on his TV, allowing the game’s bot characters to play with the item he’d created.
- There are many big publishers creating their own apps for their games, like Watch Dogs or Battlefield, but smaller developers can use PlayStation App to connect to PS4 and load an application, like drawing software for example, so that you don’t have to download and install a specific app on your smartphone. It’s open to all PS4 developers to use.
You may have already seen the new screenshots we posted of the Playstation 4 UI and Playstation App. If not have a look at the bottom left of the 6th image you will see a voice message icon, this icon reveals the Playstation 4 will allow you to send voice messages inside a chat room or via personal message. Note currently on the Playstation 3 you can only send text messages in a chat room or personal message.
@yosp (Shuhei Yoshida) also confirmed this via twitter just a few minutes ago by replying to a tweet from twitter user @kenpierce which said “On PS4 UI shots I see a “speaker” icon next to the text box. Does the PS4 support voice to text?” Yoshida’s reply was, “good catch, voice message.”
So that’s it Voice messages will be coming to Playstation 4, to view the specific screenshot in question click here.
Grand theft Auto 5 will allow you to pre-load your game on Playstation 3 if you pre-order it on PSN. Rockstar games have announced via twitter the following statement, “Those who’ve pre-ordered #GTAV on PSN will be able to preload the game as follows: Sunday 3pm BST in Europe; Monday 3am EST in the US.”
This basically means if you pre-order on PSN you can play the game at exactly midnight and won’t have to wait hours on end for the game to download, you’ll already have it on your hard-drive!

In the latest video from Playstation Access they answered some questions from the community about the Playstation 4. In this video they revealed 2 new features coming to PSN, the friend list is currently limited to 100 friends on the PS3, the PS4 will raise this limit to a massive 2000 friends but we are currently un-sure if these friends will display on other devices that have only the 100 limit.
The 2nd feature Playstation Access announced was the ability to customise the Playstation Dynamic Menu. Know huge details about this feature was announced but they did say “You can customise the layout” of the new UI, Theme support has already been announced for the system but from the sounds of it the new UI will have much better customisation features than the previous.
