Kinect is no longer mandatory, Plus no cross chat with 360 & One

Microsoft has announced the Kinect no longer has to be plugged in at all times for the Xbox One to work. Of course they did say some features will no longer work when the Kinect is un-plugged, for example you can no longer do voice navigation through the OS and you can no longer do motion movements to navigate through the OS and on games.

A Microsoft spokesman had this to say, “Games use Kinect in a variety of amazing ways, from adding voice to control your squad mates, to adding lean and other simple controls beyond the controller, to full immersive gameplay,” he says. “That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor.”

Microsoft has also announced the Xbox One will support Xbox 360 friends, this means you can view who’s online, achievement information and what they are playing etc. But the downside is Microsoft said it’s not possible to communicate via Voice/Video chat with people on the older Xbox 360, you can still text chat but voice chatting and playing on the same game together is not possible.

If you would like to see what chief Xbox One platform architect Marc Whitten had to say about it all click the read more button.

“You’ll see us add more in this area in the future. At launch, you’ll have your expanded list of friends and the ability to mark favorites so that it is fast and easy to play with the friends you care about most.”

He also confirmed that cross-console won’t be available , “For a variety of technical reasons – including the sound quality that I talk about below – we don’t support voice chat between the two systems. You will still be able to send and receive text messages to friends on both systems, however.”

“You see your friends on both systems,” he continued, “including their rich presence. My friends that are still on Xbox 360, for example, might see that I’m on Xbox One, playing Ryse. Since I can have more than 100 friends on Xbox One, if I go back to Xbox 360 and I have more than 100 friends, it will only show me the subset of my friends who are friends with me on Xbox 360.”

man…MS is really pulling 180s on everything they initially wanted. but like IndoAssassin said, they really need a sku without the Kinect and make it cheaper. then, and only then will MS and Sony be on a even playing field.

That NSA nonsense killed this idea with them. Especially since it came out them and the NSA had a program called Prism, that gathered data from internet companies.

I don’t give a fuck! I’m still not buying it. Two years from now they’re gonna switch all that stuff back on. PS4 all the way!
