Glad to see you still doing your thing and like always you provide good insight to what’s going on in gaming.
But do you really think gaming will succeed next gen? I mean features are nice and all but that’s not what defines a gaming console. It’s like going to the movies and getting free popcorn, sure the free popcorn is nice but if the movie sucks I’m going to leave. I see this happening to games next gen, we are going to get a lot of features but few great games.
Just look at how many great games we had last gen in comparison to this gen. This gen was for the most part was graphics over gameplay. And while yes graphics are important, they shouldn’t be more important than making a great game to play. Whether it’s call of duty or street fighter, most popular games this gen are copy and paste without adding ideas for a unique experience.
Greed has slowly been killing this industry in terms of day 1 DLC, online passes, bad DRM and etc. And I can only see it getting worse in the future. Unless something changes next gen is headed downhill.

The reason this gen had it’s issues was the fact that the 360 and PS3 were such HUGE leaps over their respective predecessors. It took a couple years for most devs to get a hang of developing for the consoles (specifically PS3) and even when they did the development cost was through the roof ! What’s going to make next gen better is if the nextbox and PS4 aren’t huge leaps hardware wise over these consoles. And I suspect they won’t be. This will lower development cost and they can just improve upon a lot of the flaws that the previous consoles had. To sum it up, this gen was a huge leap and we had to pay for it by their not being as many good games, soo many copy cat games because publishers are spending so much money making the game they want to guarantee a good return of cash flow instead of going broke trying to be creative. I think most of these issues will be cleared up next gen. When they say they are focusing on features next gen, it’s a blessing in disguise for video games, because it’s going to allow developers to catch up and work with hardware they’re more familiar with and take more risks because it should be cheaper to make games.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. However, I can’t see many development teams next gen taking a stand to make more creative games because it will always affect their bottom line. That will not change, whether it’s this gen or the next. And are people really willing to go out and buy another $400+ console if it’s not a big enough leap in hardware. Even if next gen allows developers to have less distance to “catch up” there is still going to be a higher price in developing games. There will never be a point in the future were developing a PS3 game is cheaper than developing a PS4 game. Therefore, money will always be the main issue and like I said before if you thought the Day 1 DLC and online passes were bad then it’s going to get worse. Especially if the rumors are true in which next gen consoles are going to lock out used games by having a one time redeemable code included with your new game. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Good video. Hopefully some of this is going to happen. The next-gen is going to focus on connecting multiple devices. I can basically guarantee that. Smartphones and tablets are going to be used to expand the gaming experience.
Nice video.
