Will Used and Rented Games Survive?
You are starting to see more and more games follow in EA’s footsteps by charging a $10 fee to play used, and rented games online. Some are even taking it even further by removing parts of the single player!
One thing that upsets me about this whole thing is that now Sony is starting to do this with their exclusive titles, starting with Resistance 3 and now Uncharted 3. I for one don’t think Microsoft will follow in these footsteps with their exclusive titles. The reason I feel this way is due to them already charging you to access online features via XboxLive, but only time will tell if Microsoft follows suit.
I don’t think any of these developers should charge to play online due to them already making a ton of money. Let me break it down for you.
*** If a game sales 500,000 that’s over $30 million made just off of half a million games sold.
*** Now if that same game sold DLC at the amount of $15 (what seems to be the standard price for DLC.) and sold 250,000 of that content at $15, they would make around $3.75 million.
Keep in mind we haven’t touched on in-game advertisements, special editions, Books, Toys, Shirts ect…
But what about people who borrow games from friends and family? Or what if you took Resistance 3 to a friends house to play online on their PlayStation 3!
I really think if the gaming industry wants to fight used games they need to go all digital or make games cheaper. People buy used games because they can’t afford two $60 games plus tax. Now don’t get me wrong, used games will always be around no matter how cheap games go, but if you for one second think these company’s are not making money, then you are wrong!

You know, DLB, this is one thing that’s just not going away. It’s sadly here to stay. And, I believe that MS will probably go ahead and do it too, even with the XBL fee. You know they love money. :p The fact is that now that these companies see they can get away with it, they’re not going to stop. That’s just like if we start seeing Sony charge for online on the PS4, we also know who to blame.
