Naughty Dog Already Working on PS4 Game With “Million Poly Character Models”
Every PS3 owner knows that when it comes to ground-breaking games, with top-notch stories and character development, Naughty Dog is the go-to developer. They’re also known for their renowned graphical fidelity. Well, it seems like that’s not about to change for the PlayStation 4.
Apparently, there’s a new job listing for a Character Artist, who has “prior professional experience with normal map extraction of human models for next-gen games.” Also in the listing, it says, “this digital sculptor will be responsible for making million poly models game ready, and support highest-res characters for renderings.”
That’s all pretty impressive considering the fact that Uncharted 2′s character models were comprised of a mere 30,000 polygons. Sony’s developers sure know how to push boundaries in terms of graphics with each new console. I can’t wait to see what this new game is and what new features it has to complement its eye candy graphics. Knowing Naughty Dog’s reputation, we’re bound to get another great story along with all those polygons.

I remember hearing when Naughty Dog was bragging back in the day of Jak and Daxter 1 having some double-digit number of polygons (somewhere from 10-99) and then bragging on how they then got several hundred polygons crammed into characters on Jak 2 or something along those lines, and now… 1m polygons? Holy crap…

Well it could be true but I’m a digital artist and I’ve gone trough a lot of job descriptions that say the same thing. It is not that they will use these million poly models in the game but that they will sculpt these high res models and then extract the normal maps that will be applied to the 30, 000 poly models. The normal maps will make the 30 k models look like the high res sculpted model without the need for extra polys. It was actually the same posting they did when they were working on uncharted 2 and 3. And similar to those used by most studios because this is one of the most impotant jobs. Just wanted to clear things up.
