Killzone 3 Completely Streamed, Less Loading Screens

17. July, 2010 PS3, PSN 4 comments

Herman Hulst, the managing director at Sony’s first party studio, Guerilla Games, has confirmed that Killzone 3 has come a long way technologically and an example of that is the omission of loading screens.

“We’re excited what the PS3 can do for us and what we can do for it… (speaking of loading screens), literally everything is streamed now”.
This generation has definatley decreased loading times but you still see them around. But some example of good loading times this gen are: Call of Duty’s four to six second load for online levels or Uncharted’s cutscenes where the level is loaded in disguise, we’ve seen amazing stuff and now come to expect it.
Apparently Killzone 3 will not have those extremely dreaded loading screens. If you recall loading screens lasted 20-30 seconds inĀ Killzone 2, even longer for multiplayer games. Even though the loading screens had that cool 3D effect with sixaxis support, it was still a long wait.
I remember when back in the PS2 & PS1 era loading screens used to be standard in every game, and it killed me to just sit through all of them. I always looked forward to the future, telling myself “When the PS3 comes out i bet there will be no loading times.” Well i guess that didn’t come true, but i have high hopes for the PS4 and “Xbox 720″

This seems to be the trend with first party PlayStation studios lately. I hope this trend continues and expands further to third party studios too. Hopefully, third parties will learn the tech behind doing this and make at least the PS3 version with fewer loading screens since it can do it. However, I don’t think that even the next consoles (720 and PS4) will be able to have no loading screens since devs. usually prioritize technical things like graphical fidelity and refresh rate (frames per second) over load times. Personally, I don’t mind waiting 15-20 seconds if it means the games themselves will have better graphics and frame rates.

To be honest, I don’t have a big problem with loadscreens unless they take like five years to load which not many games this generation have done (except for Socom Confrontation when it first came out). Also doesn’t this mean the install is going to be very big? Installing a game is a pain this generation as it takes entirely too long.

My biggest issue in Killzone 2 was the 2-3 seconds freeze on every checkpoint.
