According to the Wall Street Journal, Sony was losing $37.00 on every PS3 sold in December and now, just two months later they only lose $18.00 per PS3. Sony hopes to soon start making a profit on their PS3’s by the year 2011. That is, if they don’t have another price drop on the system.

This is a good sign, I hope this means they won’t charge for the PSN. In a years time they may even begin to make a profit as the parts become cheaper.

@joe_bevis: If they’re losing just that much man, all they need to do to turn a profit is sell one peripheral or game. And you know someone’s going to buy more than just one peripheral or game within a couple months time after buying it. They’re already at a state of profit-making, which is a very good thing for us as that means they’ll have more funds to make more features for the PSN. Also, I have a feeling Sony’s going to give us features that are worth our while such as free movie rentals or something like that with the Premium service. (I do like the PSN being free just like you, but I realize the inevitability of it eventually being a paid service.

When it comes to charging for PSN, I think you’re overlooking something blumatt and joe_bevis. Basically, right now Sony charges publishers for bandwidth to put their content on the PSN, and over on Xbox Live the consumers pay those fees instead of the publishers (which is why you often see more demos etc).
So if Sony were to start charging for the PSN (as standard, I’m not talking about the premium service here), all they’d be doing is dumping the bandwidth fees onto the consumer instead of the publisher, where they should be IMO.
So what I’m saying here is, Sony themselves wouldn’t make any money from charging for the PSN, just as Microsoft don’t get money from charging the consumer (well, no more than Sony do now). So the fact that PS3s are still being sold at a loss wouldn’t mean that they’re going to start charging for PSN.

Just like Danboyadvance I don’t remember that either, not that I’m saying it wasn’t said but I don’t remember it. As for multiple accounts, my sons 360 had 7 different accounts on it. All this proves is that the numbers can inflated on either console.
And for the 10 year lifecycle, Sony doesn’t mean they won’t release another console within that timespan, it just means they expect the PS3 to last at least 10 years before they stop manufacturing it. All you need to do is look at Sonys previous consoles to figure that one out.
If you hate the PS3 that much, or if its just Sony that you dislike thats fine but at least put a little thought into your posts.

Oops, forgot to add this. I think this is good for Sony in that it’s possible they could be making a profit on consoles sold within a few months and if manufacturing costs keep dropping like that the consumers might start seeing the benefits of that in the form of price cuts while Sony in turn can keep the PS3 financially competitive with the 360 without losing money.

I don’t think they are losing money. Not in the real way. They are still selling PS2’s. Maybe it only cost them 15 bucks to build a ps2 who knows. They also have psp’s. The thing is, sony will not fail this generation. They have crappy ideas, lame, retarted aps like life with playstation senseme shit. and all those bullcrap. still it is great gaming machine. and that’s what all matters for us gamers.

next time when they come out with ps4 i doubt they will price it in a loss and i will still buy it even if it is $1000 because its worth it! no company keeps funding a project that is a total loss, i mean look at the numbers if 20 million units sold before the price went down, $37 per unit $74million dollars loss.

I think you’ve got Sony confused with Microsoft.
Telling people there is no virus, bug, faulty relay switches, overheating issues, or you have to pay to get your 360 fix when they knew from the beginning that there was a problem with their product, sounds to me like a company that tries to make people think their product is good when they know it isn’t.
