In a recent interview with IGN, Sony’s Serior Vice President of Marketing, Peter Dille talked about something that’s definitely been on our mind for some time and that’s charging for PSN. Here’s what he had to say:
“It’s been our philosophy not to charge for it from launch up until now, but Kaz recently went on the record as saying that’s something we’re looking at. I can confirm that as well. That’s something that we’re actively thinking about. What’s the best way to approach that if we were to do that? You know, no announcements at this point in time, but it’s something we’re thinking about. “
Dille also added that he is confident that the PS3 will overtake the 360 this generation and also thinks that the PS3 will still be kickin’ in 10 years while the 360 will not, much like the PS2 and original Xbox. He also doesn’t see an entire catalog of PS3 games digitally in the store any time soon because of large file downloads being time-consuming but doesn’t reject more big digital games coming like Burnout. He also adds to expect more to come to Home this year, he said there are 30 partners working on different spaces in Home, he also expects things like more and better content and a better focus on media, not just games in Home.
He also adds that they are working to make PSN better, “making it more user friendly, addressing UI … cool stuff that I’ve seen in the works that hopefully we’ll be able to talk about a little bit more and show you guys and the community. “

All I can say is if they do charge $69.99 for it. Thats a rip off seeing that XBL offers way more then what that survey showed. Hopefully the survey pricing won’t be what it is. But other then that if they add the nice features we all want. I don’t mind paying one bit. Only concern that I have is, Hopefully they charging will give us more DLC for our games, and some good PSN Titles.

PSN being free is one of the upsides to owning a ps3 IMO. If they do charge it should be a premium service but me being able to play my games online should stay “FREE” I already pay internet service. Just because I don’t pay sony doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be able to play my 60 dollar game online.

They should keep a Free service running even if it Basic online access or less DLc not that there is any DLC for the ps3 …i cant see it being worth the money since the PSN is rubbish anyway …
although if they do charge its money they can invest into DLC and stuff ..again xbox 360 has the lead on that …cant sony try something New Instead of taking some one else’s idea and trying to implement it into the ps3…
they should charge for HOME … Mainly cos its crap and needs a ton of money splashed in on it to Fix its loading !
Hot debate. What do you think?

@Red Rings Of Death Pwns: If that makes you sleep at night…
My own opinion:
This is a good thing. Sony will work much harder seeing as this will let them pocket some money, and maybe have less people game sharing and creating bogus accounts for reasons that people here probably know. I think it’s cool that everything we have now is free and we only have to pay for premium things

Off Topic: Does anyone know if full game invite support is mandatory on PS3 games? Hustle Kings just came out and that supports invited from the XMB too if anyone was wondering

PSN needs to make everyone who makes games for their system use the psn format for all their online games. This shit with this game using this and that game using that makes psn retarded IMO. All games should use psn the same way. I don’t think they need to charge us to atleast get that done.

AGREED. once they adress all that, THEN they can launch the premium psn anyway they please. but my family cant afford another “bill” so i will sticking to basic psn for the time being, assuming they keep a free version in order to not piss off alot of ps3 users.

while they are at it, why no just give a headset free with the console idc if its wired cuz i am sick of being the only guy in the lobby with a mic. I mean team based games arent exactly team based if the team can’t communicate.

Sony stated that if they were to release a premium service, the “Free” part of PSN would stay intact and those who choose to go the “Free” Route will have PSN like it is now without any new features. ex.(Cross game chat).

I wish Sony would give us Cross Game Chat and In-game music in the free service. Any paid service could be like free Qore and movie rentals, etc.

@Brown856: yes MW2 and the MAG beta, i am exaggerating a bit there are some cases where there are 2-3 people with a mic but mostly its just me and one other guy on the other team.

I think this will be a good move on Sonys part seeing as they are trying to come out in a even profit margin by the end of this year or beginning of next. Yes, they need to keep the free service in tact but as for cross game chat, Xbox Live has it because they can pay workers to keep it maintained through the money they are getting from their subscribers. Right now the only thing that is keeping PSN free is HOME ( which some people do not need to complain about) and the media in the PSN Store. If what I read was true, it will be worth paying for the premium service and Sony would not dissapoint its loyal customers. All I can say is they just need to keep the basic PSN free and invest in more services and features of the new “premium service” that is coming soon.

If they keep what we already have as free, I’m ok with that. It’ll take a lot for me to purchase any “premium service” that the PSN could offer. Personally, I’m satisfied with the PSN as is, they just need to work on the backend of the service to keep it much more stability.
At Sony’s current financial position I don’t blame them for looking at the PSN as a source of income. However make no mistake, I think that the “premium service” will only have superficial improvements and development for equal and better things compared to XBL will be few and far between.
The most annoying thing about PSN for me are the longer downloads vs. XBL and the occasional drops. All they REALLY need is better throughput through the network.

@XPUNJABIX:
I tend to think that many people have Mic’s and they just don’t feel like using them since MW2 has a One Man Army Perk LOL There’s no need for a team. (Sarcasm, but still true).
People use their Mic’s when they play with people they know.

It’s unfortunate but Sony will eventually start charging for what they call, “Premium” services. One such service is cross-chat. However, they will still provide some level of free PSN just like 360 does.
I’ve said it before and I will say it again, I feel that the PS3 is a better value overall. However, Xbox Live is still so incredibly addictive…

They need majot improvements before they even think about chargign people , u get signed out 24/7 , pay for tht i dont think so , get realistic sony , you can barely cope with the amount of people thts using servers , get that sorted then think of the future !

The best part of all this is that the online on the PS3 will STILL be free even after this premium service is offered. We will still be able to do everything we do now for free. Anything more will simply be a paid-for option– an option I’m probably not going to include myself in on even if it has X game chat and a better party system. I don’t have a lot of cash floating around to spend JUST to have a few better features. However, if they include some sort of Netflix-like offering like being able to rent a few movies off the PSN each month, I may be swayed more to pay up.

Key Point: The PS3 will STILL have its selling point of free online gaming. There will just be an option to make it better.

psn free service is shit compared to the 360, i hope they can improve even if it costs money to do so, like cross game chat and just easier use of the friend invitation of mw2, boy thats a pain in the ass

quite honestly, i don’t understand why PSN gets such a bad rep. IMHO, i think its better than XBL. 1) PSN is free and XBL is $50 2) I never have problems with lagging on PSN where as on XBL, i cant go a game without lagging on MW2. 3)Playstation store has way more stuff that i would like to purchase whereas marketplace does really have anything i like.
Besides XBL really doesn’t offer more than PSN does. It may seem like it but it doesn’t. plus, people act like XBL is flawless. ITS NOT!!!!! I have soooo many issues with XBL that i never have with PSN
also, i thought that sony was keeping the free service and adding a subscription service.

@martuna: dude, i freakin own a 360 and i have a live account. i play on cod all the time on xbl. all i am saying is that xbl is not better than psn. psn is more stable. sure xbl has cross game chat and game invites. but it definitely isn’t something worth paying $50 a year for. especially since its always lagging.
