Activision: Subscription Fees for Call of Duty

*Community Member Submitted: Thanks XPUNJABIX*
In a recent conference, Activision Blizzard has revealed to investors, a new Call of Duty, announced that a subscription for the series is in the works. What isn’t a surprise about the announcements is a plan for a Call of Duty 7 this year. However, what may surprise everyone is a plan for implementing a subscription based service for the Call of Duty franchise. During the conference, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said, “If you think about the success we’ve had in other product categories on subscription, you can get a sense of the direction that we want to take that franchise.”
Although we most-likely wont see a subscription fee this time around for Call of Duty 7, we may see it for Infinity Wards next big drop. Remember there was rumors before that Infinity Ward was working on an MMO type shooter, and that fits the subscription profile pretty well; However, only time will tell.
*Within this same conference they also hinted that they might not release as many big, plastic peripherals this year.
Here are some things to think about:
Call of Duty Subscription Fees on top of XBL Fee?
Subscription Fee with or without DLC Fees?
Call of Duty Subscription on top of PSN Premium?
What are your thoughts? would you pay a subscription to play Call of Duty?

They must be crazy just because their game sold like crazy they think they are the big dawgs now so they want to charge. You don’t see the Halo franchise charging for online play.

I’m not about to pay for that crap. They better change the play style from arcade style to more of a simulation style. This knifing from 25ft away is starting to piss me off. (Fuck commando perk!)

Well if you really think about it… Xbox Live users already pay a subscription fee. So they may be willing to do such. I highly doubt it’ll fly on the PS3. Thats dead on arrival.

Idont think so xbox people wont put up with that we already pay 50 dollars a year Im not gonna pay another fee just for one game

If they start charging for ANY game on top of having a XBL/PSN fee, I WILL NOT BE GAMING ANYMORE.
2 / 14 / 2010 9:36 am
fuck that
2 / 14 / 2010 9:59 am
hell no! and whos gonna be playojg COD 7 is all about halo reach. at least on xbox. ps3 will probably have resistace3/killlzone 3 by then,

even though this is old news, they must be stupid to think people will play to play an fps online
2 / 14 / 2010 12:51 pm
wow guess im never going to buy another COD then if they do this shit.
2 / 14 / 2010 2:02 pm
lol idc, i dont play cod games anyway…
2 / 14 / 2010 2:13 pm
That is the worst idea ever.
Where is the Sunday poll? I guess it’s valentines day tho so they have an excuse. All the admins are getting some pussy right about now and the DLB network is the last thing on their mind.

@mikedemo1:
Agree, though I think both would complain. 360 gamers about having to pay an ‘extra’ fee while PS3 gamers would be like “Hell, no”, free for me.
On a side-note I can’t imagine what Sony can do to make me pay for a Premium PSN service.

I actually read about this yesterday. My understanding was that the reason for this is largely due to the $200+ million reported loss in the fiscal 4th quarter from the Guitar Hero franchise. Activision releases too many versions of the same game and decides they want to try to make that loss up by charging the consumer a subscription fee. I won’t be paying it when it does happen.

Boycottttt Subscriptionssss

Activision must want to become the most hated publisher. I won’t buy any COD / Activision game that makes us pay to play online. If they go ahead with this, I hope it doesn’t work for them, otherwise other publishers will follow suit.

What comes up must come down. And I was hoping another FPS (Medal of Honor, BBFC2,etc.) would come around and eventually take their crown but with a subscription move Activision will just take themselves out of the competition. They should just slow down with the Guitar Hero series and not get money hungry with COD just to recoup their losses.

fuck i dont play the game now and if they do charge well they can kiss my left ass cheek .
2 / 15 / 2010 1:02 am
they only insured there destruction fps will die down and with them doing this only hastens there demise you will see in there arrogance they built a tower that will only come crashing down to the floor. people will decide if the wont to stick around for this bull shit. my thoughts are the same as snake-oo but except they can suck my 9in dick because i will not be screwed over by them.

I’m not shocked at all. I mean it’s Acti-Blizzad. Blizzard makes WoW, probably the most played game on PC since it’s inception and that game has a monthly subscription payment model.
Now will I continue buying call of duty games if it requires a subscription? probably not.
2 / 15 / 2010 4:31 am
fuck that! I’ll bye a GameCube and play that if that shit ever happens!
2 / 15 / 2010 6:26 am
That would be suicide.

Okay, it’s not the fact that it’s subscription-based that would make not buy (I believe a good enough game would be worth the subscription). However, the game is NOT good enough to warrant subscription. Glitches everywhere, bad servers and peer-to-peer outdated shit, unbalanced perks and guns.
If I see another CoD game with last stand or commando or any of the other stuff I mentioned in the other post on this topic a while a go, I WILL NOT BUY IT, subscription or not. (I’ll just put my hopes in Resistance 3 and Killzone 3 or the next Harmonix music game product
)
However, if a CoD game comes out with fantastic servers, addicting gameplay that is balanced and works, I would pay a subscription for it. IT WOULD NEED TO BE NEAR PERFECTION (suited to me, of course, not everyone).

Oops, could someone delete that first post and this one? I just wanted to make a few edits because I care about grammar and have OCD, but didn’t know how to delete or edit my own posts.
Cheers!

So let me get this straight: They want to charge a monthly subscription fee for functionality like stat tracking and DLC, when Bungie and Microsoft have been providing detailed stat tracking for the Halo games for free for several years now, and when you already have to pay a set amount of money or Microsoft Points for DLC like map packs?
If so, Bobby Kotick has officially lost his mind.
