How Much Does it Cost’s to Make a PS3?
Hey guys, did you ever want to know how much it costs Sony to make a PS3? I certainly have! Thanks to iSuppli Corp, they have provided us with a nice concise chart and break down of major costs that it takes to manufacture a PS3.
As you can see the major costs are the Blu-ray drive, HDD, Cell Chip/Nvida Components, and “Other components.” I think its extremly interesting to see the cost of some of this stuff and how far it must of come down from the beginning! The Blu-Ray drive is only $66 and the Cell Processor is only &38! I think thats crazy! However, the most important thing to take away from this chart is that the PS3 still costs over $299 to make. That means that Sony is still losing $30+ on manufacturing the PS3! so when will the PS3 break even? I would say that Sony has come a long way when they were losing over $100 per ps3 sold. So i would imagin that with this next year Sony should be breaking even with the PS3. What do you all think about this one?

Judging by this chart, sony are losing $30+ a console. I think the new “premium service” is their way (or one of many …) of breaking even. This could mean that the subscription could be only $30+ too. As a side note, i hope you dont have to buy premium for every account you have, i.e you only need to buy premium for ONE ps3, and itll cover every account tied to that ps3. What you guys think ?

I think its farily normal for game console manufacturers to make a loss inthe first year, so that they can gain market share, and therefore then make a profit in year 2 and 3 afterwards, profiting from licensing fees and publishers.

@MataaayBGS: Wow, so this chart proves that Microsoft could very easily put in Wifi for free. Hell, $4 isn’t anything. Charging $100 for that is horse shit.

Also, the PS3 will probably break even on mfg. costs per console next year. By that time, the cost of a blu ray drive will have gone done probably by that much. They’ll be making money on their console next year if not sooner.

consoles aren’t made to cut a profit. Almost every gaming console in history was sold at an operations loss. Systems rely on external factors such a games, services, etc. to generate revenue.

It wouldnt make sense for premium PSN to cover a PS3 itself, is that how microsoft does it? I never had more than one account on xbox live before. I think itll be per account.

I forget the exact prices but I do remember seeing a chart for the cost of prices for the PS3 at launch, selling them at $600 they were still losing about $100 per console.

don’t get angry at me blame Sony for being stupid at launch, the nerve of trying to sell a console for $600 was a memorable epic fail in Sony history. They think they can sell for just having the Playstation brand, not everyone parents and consumer dish out $600 for a freaking console with no titles to be proud of at launch…that just Sony poor marketing and stubborness to listen to consumer who made them instead of alienating those gamers who just wants to play games, thus Wii sold millions for that and the 360 came out 2nd. 2nd for letting consumer have a choice to just experience next gen gaming with low price and just upgrade after with addon…now thats good MS market strategy, because in the end games makes this console not hardware ready Bluray format…geez~

Where are the labor and capital costs? Not that they’re going to reduce the total cost, but it would be nice to calculate their profits. (even if they are losses)

I think everyone is forgetting that companies buy their parts in bulk, everything on this list is far cheaper because of the deals that they get on components.

they make their money back on video games. Video games are marked up a lot more than the cost of it.
