EA has arguably made one of the best acquisitions in the video game industry of recent years when it purchase RPG trendsetters, BioWare. Since the 2009 purchase, BioWare has very much been the proverbial Goose laying the Golden eggs. The 2009 release of Dragon Age: Origins was the highest rated IP for EA in more than a year and now Mass Effect 2 has released, being helmed as the ‘Avatar of Video Games’ by Time magazine. Keep in mind that Avatar actually has it’s own game.
Mass Effect 2 has sold over two million units worldwide in its first week of release. On launch day, the term “Mass Effect” was in the top 10 trending topics on Twitter and most searched on Google News. MSNBC.com said, “Mass Effect will go down as one of the most influential video game series of all-time.”
Mass Effect 2 has earned 40 perfect scores, amassed over 30 editor’s choice awards and has donned the covers of 45 magazines worldwide.

@Machee: Dude why don’t you just make love to Mass Effect 2 and get it over with. lol Seriously, lol. It’s a good game. Ok. Just remember all the PS3 exclusives that are coming too. You can’t be making claims that this is going to be the year of the 360 just yet. We have a long year ahead of us so wait and see what both consoles bring to us. The Natal or PS Motion controller may prove to be big selling points and we don’t know which one will be better. (not sell better, mind you, as sales do not mean quality. It can mean quality, but not always. Mass Effect 2 is an example of a good game that also sells well. Modern Warfare 2 is an example of an ok game that sells exceptionally well.)

@Red Rings Of Death Pwns: I wouldn’t say never. I’ve heard rumors of it being worked on for the PS3 too. It’ll probably be like Bioshock, which eventually came to the PS3. Regardless, I’ve got other games to play. lol I’m not into RPG’s too much. I might get FF Versus XIII, maybe. I doubt it though because funds are short and great games are too many. God of War III and GT5 are priorities for me.

Actually mass effect 2 is on the pc aswell as 360… And the sales here include PC and 360, so y’all just shut the phunk up! And dam mass effect 2 is a good game I am slightly jealous of pc and 360 at the moment, but with the line up the ps3 has over the next couple of months we don’t need me2. Why Do PS3 Exclusives Not Sell?
This question has been asked many times: Why do many PS3 games, such as Uncharted 2, get mediocre sales?
To be clear, the sales weren’t bad; I’m sure it recouped costs and turned a profit, and it sold well compared to other PS3 exclusives, but compared to the other sales hits of the year, it’s not close. And for a game that is of such universally praised quality and so seemingly mass-market friendly, it’s puzzling.
The infamous games industry financial analyst, Michael Pachter, said:
“I’m still completely baffled at Uncharted 2’s sales… I just don’t get it.”
Now, I expect a sales analyst like this to have bad taste and to be clueless about the games themselves, but for a sales analyst to be clueless about sales? What good are you?
Anecdotally, I recently met a few people socially who happened to mention that they were really into Modern Warfare 2. I was surprised that they said they had a PS3 (I expected an Xbox). I asked what they thought of Uncharted 2, and they never even heard of it. I mean literally, they had absolutely no clue what it was, nor any interest in doing so. I asked what else they played, and they named a few sports games, but basically weren’t familiar with anything outside of the real big names: Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, sports games, Wii games, and to a lesser extent GTA/Halo/Gears. And while this is only a small anecdote, it’s a good barometer that explains this larger trend in the U.S.

All technology ultimately becomes a fashion item. It was true for timekeeping, and it’s definitely true of computing and telecommunications.
I think that fashion mindset applies to games. You can attribute some of the fates of video game sales to clearly understandable issues such as pricing, product quality, and advertising, but almost any long-term observer will conclude that there is a large dose of unpredictable, unexplainable, seeming randomness to it all.

And neither is Gran Turismo 5. hmm. what about Heavy Rain… and The Last Guardian… and the Resistance series, Killzone 2, etc. The list goes on. They’re ALL hardcore titles, especially God of War III. And never say never about Mass Effect not going multi platform. Microsoft doesn’t own Bioware. It may be awhile, but it could still come to the PS3.

I’d like to get this game on PC; don’t have a 360. Metacritic has an overall rating of 96, which I’m pretty sure is one of the highest scores credited to a video game. Good job to Bioware.
This seems more like a third-person shooter with rpg elements rather than the other way around, which imo is a good thing. This game is well deserved of it’s praise. Good post A Big Shot.
Finally, what’s sad about this article is that most of the talk isn’t about how great this game is, but rather the pointless dribble spouted by the DLB community. Just because you’re on the internet doesn’t give you a douche-badge. Grow up and represent the DLB Network the right way.

Machee, none of those games are hardcore. NONE. halo sucks, barely any skill, you just point and shoot (like cod). Gears of war is praised heavily for it’s singleplayer not multiplayer, and also doesn’t take a right lot of skill to play. Forza is singleplayer mainly. Madden and fifa aren’t hardcore either! WTF us wrong with you ?! An example of a hardcore game counterstrike source on the pc, or team fortress 2 on pc/ps3/xbox360. MAG is hardcore…. I haven’t seen any hardcore titles from the 360 yet. Because M$ even say their Market us directed at the more casual gamer, rather than hardcore gamers… You are so damn dumb. How old are you? You act like a 6 year old child.. A game isn’t hardcore because it’s popular. Intact it’s quite the opposite. It’s hardcore if it takes Hella skill and experience playing the game to be good. It’s also hardcore if there are loads of clanatches, leagues, pug’s etc. Halo is not the most played fps, call of duy and css are the most played. Maybe battlefield 2 up there aswell. MAG isn’t point and shoot. And IRS more than just running around killing the enemy mindlessl, it’s more tactical based and takes teamwork to win the game.

MAG is more than just running around killing the enemy mindlessly, it takes teamwork and skill and tactics to win the game (Ie hardcore).
