PS3 Outselling The Xbox 360 This Holiday Season: The Real Truth

ps3

I found a great article that illustrates how much the media has construed the actual “known” figures for consoles sold in the recent months. I along with many others were shocked to see how the PS3 lost int he NPD numbers for the month of November. This was all the talk on many gaming blogs and sites, supposedly the Xbox 360 was crushing the PS3 in sales. Well what most people forgot, or were failed to of been shown were the overall figures of worldwide sales where the PS3 is actual outselling the 360 by over half a million consoles.

I just found the numbers and break down of things from this article very interesting. I am not a “fanboy” or care about one consoles success over the other, as i own both systems. Yet, i do like to know the true figures of how things are going, and i was thrown off by the NPD figures and media talk of last week. Here are some figures from the article:

  • In November in the U.S. The PlayStation 3 sold 710.4K units and the Xbox 360 sold 819.5K a difference of 109.1k Units.
  • In the same month of November, in Europe, PS3 outsold Xbox by a margin of about 215,000
  • In Japan, in the same period, PS3 outsold Xbox by about 140,000 units.
  • In November, in terms of units sold in markets outside Europe, America & Japan, PS3 sold about 740,000 units (as much as it sold in US), while Xbox sold 500,000.
  • In the month of November, Sony sold about 500,000 more consoles than Microsoft.
  • Sony has closed down the gap between ps3 & Xbox by about 1 million units. That is, 4 month ago xbox360 was roughly 7 million units ahead, while now it’s 6 millions ahead.

What do you all think?

    That means by this time next year, the PS3 should be neck and neck with the 360 because there are alot of deal breaker games for people who are waiting to get the PS3, namely two of its biggest franchises: God of War III and Gran Turismo 5.

    @Cheesus Krust: Ehh, it’s just a guess, ya know. Either way, it doesn’t really matter all too much. But, judging by the lineup of game next year, it shouldn’t be too much of a “bold statement”.

    Huh? NPD’s are US numbers only. What’s misleading? US sites and magazines are reporting on US numbers. Why would they report European numbers?

  12. If you think this is a “raving PS3 fanboy site” with “raving fanboy lunatics”, then why do you continue to visit and post comments? There’s a billion other websites out there if you don’t like this one.

    wow. okay sorry people for the misunderstanding. I guess some of you didn’t understand that i wasn’t saying the NPD numbers are misleading, i was saying the MEDIA as a whole (when the NPD numbers came out) was misleading. I thought it would be pretty clear as to what the point of this was if you took a look at the original article. This really doesn’t have much to do with the NPD numbers at all, its just more about how the NPD numbers affected overall media opinion and coverage of the holiday console race. Also, i didn’t mean that gaming blogs in general who covered the NPD’s were misleading, just that sites/blogs as a whole assumed that the 360 was smashing the PS3 this season, and there was a lot of that going on. I hope this clears things a up a little for people.

    I think the point is that consumer keeps on buying back the 360 no matter how many times they had theirs broke down. It only proves that it does sell more and NPD numbers shows it.

    @Damon

    Im just being true here unlike because raving fanboys and their fanboyism has to stop because everything they do and say are just irrational and out of place

    Horrible article by bball230, now the most trusted name in the industry (NPD) is wrong. The reason NPD is the gold standard, is they give the most accurate sales in the world, especially the video game industry because they let investors know the difference between a pack-in & stand alone sales.

    @blumatt,
    The PS3 wouldn’t come neck & neck with the 360 even if the 360 didnt sell 1 console in 2010! & you think God of War 3 is going to be the years biggest game, you forgot about Halo:Reach. Reach will outsell the top 2 PS3 exclusives for the year (NPD). GT5 will sell great but not as good as it did when it was a pack-in.

    blumatt, Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell:Conviction, Crackdown 2, Fable 3, Alan Wake (is the wild card), & the best selling game of 2010 Halo:Reach will make a very difficult year for the PS3.

    This is Unbelievable, i cant believe how many people have misunderstood what my post says…
    @otherZinc, please point out where i said the NPD was wrong? i hardly said anything about the Official NPD’s.. I was talking about the MEDIA and the 360.

    @Machee, I’m not 12 years old. I’m 17 and yes the topic is apparently pretty controversial, which may or may not be a good or bad thing. I will be more careful towards what controversial topics i post again, however, this really is not such a big deal that everyone has made it into. Its simply put: The media pushed that the 360 was winning this holiday, this is a post of the real numbers.. thats it.

    @OtherZinc

    yeah i feel like 360 will own 2010, they were holding all their big titles for next year and just let PS3 show their cards. The 360 line ups are so well spread next year that all i will be seeing is the 360 logo. Games like Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, Crackdown 2, Fable 3, Alan Wake, and of course Halo Reach that will kill any title on the 2010 holidays…Natal is coming out and im so sure MS has a big game announcement for GDC or E3 this year …OMG!

    @BBall230

    because your posting this numbers just look like a desperate move to save someone’s face. Its like a whining kid saying “Oh oh yeah, PS3 has sold better outside US…here here see…add all up and you get bigger numbers! ” …this really sounded like a fanboy would say on comments section…post something more intelligent and stop proving these things because it wont change the NPD numbers and how 360 outsold PS3 for $100,000 more. I tell you why, MW2 sold 4 million on the 360 and that helped the 360 console sales abit because lots of hardcore gamers prefer 360 for playing MW2 then the PS3 that sold like 1.7 units

    Sorry I meant I”m looking for the article that has the misleading titles. All my google searches come up with nothing but NPD number, and most people that frequent gaming blogs understand that NPD means AMERICAN sales numbers, DON”T YOU??? The November NPD’s are the big story because everyone was certain that the PS3 would take it. So when it didn’t it became THE story.

    I do like how both you and this other blogger are mad at the media for there “misleading coverage” only to have thrown back in your face. Sorry but it is very ironic. Nothing personal of coarse.

    Print a retraction maybe??

    @bball230 I understand what you was saying in the article. I don’t why people are making a big argument about it and like you said I didn’t see you say anything about the NPD numbers being wrong.

    He is saying that in just only North America the 360 outsold the PS3 but in over all sells North America, Europe, and Japan the PS3 out sold the 360.

    STOP THE FANBOYS, the reason XBOX sales and PS3 sales are so close is not because of some reason why PS3 is so much better like alot of you would think, but if you have a good friend with a BOX/PS then you would be more likely to buy that…. and you wont buy the same console twice so it XBOX/PS3 had better sales in previouse years they would be down this year wouldent they

    …some logic for some retards
