  5. Just note people that FFXIII sold over 1.5 million the first week in Japan so anyone who thought FF couldn’t sell anymore are in for a surprise. I’m not sure why the 360 would sell well in Japan right now because FFXIII is still a PS3 exclusive in Japan.

  8. Pretty much what I expected from the numbers, except of course the PS3 did supremely well due to FFXIII.

    @SourceHeroic:
Yeah I don’t think the PS2 will die out until next generation. Hell, I’m going to buy one in a couple of weeks :)

@SourceHeroic: Yea I wish they would just put the psp’s together and the ds’s together, regardless of their version.
@DamonTheMoney: That is sadly probably going to be the truth. However, I hope they drop them next year.

Just out of interest, why do you hope that they drop the PS2 next year? It’s got some of the best games ever made, I think they should keep it going until they’ve stopped selling altogether.

@DamonTheMoney: I would have to agree. I think they should drop the PS2. Yeah its one of the best if not the best console ever made. Yes it has the games there but Sony needs to drop the PS2 and focus more on the PS3. On top of that they still haven’t made up there mind with the PSP’s. So many PSP’s for me to count. Then they have the PS3. Thats to many gaming console’s on the market at once. not saying thats a bad thing but seriously? They PS2 has came and done what it suppose to do. Whats left for the PS2 to do? You can find a PS2 damn near everywhere now. So they should stop making them and selling them. For those who want a PS2 can just find one at Gamestop or internet, etc. Thats if they don’t have a launch PS3. Thats how I feel about it. I love the life cycle of Sony console’s but the PS2 cycle has came and left.

I think I’ll have to disagree with you there. From how I’ve seen it, the PS2 is probably the main source of income for the Playstation department of Sony. It’s dead cheap to manufacture, meaning that whenever a PS2 sells it’s pure profit. And it’s been clear that Sony isn’t paying any of it’s attention to the PS2; there’s no new games developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, no new hardware revisions of the console etc. So none of the attention is being taken away from the PS3 or the PSP.
And from what we’ve seen, the PS2 isn’t just selling a small amount; in November it sold over 200,000 and selling 150,000 the month before, and that’s just in the USA alone. It’s likely that the money the PS2 makes for Sony goes toward the production of PS3 and PSP games (and maybe consoles).
So the real question is, with that in mind, would it actually be beneficial to Sony to stop selling the PS2, or would it hurt them?

@DamonTheMoney: Well, I guess when you put it like that it kind of does make sense to keep making it. They probably are making almost pure profit. I guess I just wish they would put back in BC in the PS3 via software and THEN drop the PS2. Those people yet to upgrade would readily do so then. Point well taken.

My bad for the double post (laptop keyboards suck)

@DamonTheMoney: I see what you mean but what I’m saying is the PS2 life cycle is over so Sony should kill the PS2. Yes its making money and there not losing anything on it but that doesn’t mean keep making it. Sony needs to stop making PS2’s and PSP’s. PSP Go is good but didn’t they announce a PSP2 in 2010? Seriously? To man PSP’s is a waste of money and will do nothing but confuse people who doesn’t know much about PSP’s. Only people who will see the difference is hardcore gamers, and Sony employee’s LOL. PS2 on the other hand need to just leave period. Yes its a great system and unstoppable. but its going on 2010 whats the point of making them besides profit? Before we know it 2013 will be here and will they still be making PS2’s at that time? HOPEFULLY not. I don’t think I see any Ad’s on TV or such anymore anyways. the PS2 will live on regardless if it is dead or not. So there really is no reason to keep making them besides profit. I highly doubt Sony is that broke to keep making the PS2 to keep rolling in the cash for there loses.

Oh and one more thing the money they use to make the PS2’s. I’m sure its a small amount but that money can go to DLC content for our games. Sony lacks DLC anyways.

  17. @bryant16319:
I’m not sure where you’re coming from. Profit is the only reason Sony exists, period. Of course there’s no other reason to be selling the PS2 besides profit, that’s why they made a PS1, PS2 and PS3 in the first place. They need to be making money, and have some funds going into current projects or the company simply won’t run.

The main thing here is that Sony has generated a massive loss from the PS3, absolutely huge. They’ve lost about 5 or 6 billion dollars, and the total net worth of Sony (the entire company, not just the Playstation department) is about $30 billion. So they lost 20% of their money, essentially. Which is … well, bad! LOL.
So regardless of whether or not it does affect the PSP and PS3, Sony NEED to be making some of their money back. And remember, even now they’re still making a loss with each PS3 slim they sell.

Besides, these guys know the business they’re in and I’m sure they’ve got a thousand accountants on the payroll who know what’s best for them, so we can rest assured that they’re making the right decisions about the PS2.

@DamonTheMoney: Yes Sony comes from profit but if it wasn’t for US buyers there be no Sony. We buy Sony product and make them who they are today. Thats how I see it atleast.

Yes Sony lost alot of money making the PS3. There almost hit even. Yes they are a multi billion dollar company but if it wasn’t for us buying there console’s/product there be no PS3 etc. Thats why I say we made Sony who they are today right along with Microsoft and whatever company. I’m just saying the PS2 needs to die. Stop spending money making them and buy some DLC for our games. Thats why Microsoft always gets DLC first or exclusive. Sony worries about the PS2 and all those PSP models that we don’t need. Yes Sony knows whats best for them but they screwed up alot of stuff when releasing the PS3 and what they decided what will be best for them. Now that the PS2 got Sony to where they are now they should move on from it and put all attention on the PS3 so the PS3 will have a life like the PS2. thats all I’m saying but we all stated to our own opinion and by the end of the day Sony makes that paper (money) and we get nothing LOL

Perhaps you have a point in the sense that if sony kills the ps2 and somehow manages to make all PS3 BC. It might increase the sales of the ps3, which is what sony really needs. But who knows, we are are speculating here and I doubt any of us really has taken a look and sony’s income statements.

@praveen: If i remember correctly Sony the gaming division has no part in Sony pictures etc. Every company losses money. Its a part of business. Yes the PS2 makes them money. so your telling me by the time 2011 or 2012 and so on comes its fine if Sony is still making PS2’s? The PS3 makes them more money so they should focus more on PS3 then a last gen system. If they stop making PS2’s now. Those user’s will buy a PS3. I never said USA makes Sony money I said US as in US the people in the world. You misunderstand what I was saying If i men’t USA I would have put USA. Yes the world makes Sony thats what I said in the first place. So don’t put extra add on’s to my words like USA when I clearly put US as in us the people.

I think you’re overestimating the effect that the PS2’s existance has on the PS3 and the PSP.
As I’ve said before, Sony aren’t making any new games for the PS2 and they aren’t working on improving the hardware. So effectively, no effort or focus is going into the PS2s production. The only work that goes into producing the PS2 is the factory(ies) that have it on a production line.
Thus, the only real change that stopping the PS2’s production would be that there would be spare factories that could produce extra PS3s and PSPs. I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound like a good reason to stop the massive income from the PS2, which (quite obviously) goes toward the production of things involved with the PS3 and PSP.
Would you explain exactly how the PS2’s existence affects the PS3’s (rather than a simple blanket statement), because I can only think of reasons why it does not hinder the PS3, it only helps it.
