PS3’s Firmware Update v3.10 Preview

The rumors were true, the next firmware update for the PS3 will be coming “soon” and will feature Facebook integration, when you get a trophy or purchase something off the PlayStation store you can choose to update your Facebook status with those things. Also, many people complained about the look of the friends list that came in the last update. Sony has changed the look to where the “info bar” only shows up on the name you have highlighted, furthermore, you can change the color of your profile. There’s also more features, everything’s detailed in the video above.

doubt i will use this feature. dont use my facebook account that often. i wouldve rather seen a twitter update similar to this.

I agree, Twitter would have been a better update. But this facebook app looks nice. I dont use my photos that often so thats not too big. As for the firends list, its an improvement, but it would be really cool if we were able to apply skins to our profiles in the future. Keep up the good work SONY!

As I said, I’m not really interested in Facebook for PS3. I stopped using social networking sites as soon as I realised that it wasn’t actually helping my social life :-/
And I agree with hatmantc and tjmul, I would’ve preferred a Twitter update like this because I actually use that somewhat. But, it was a smarter move for Sony to go with Facebook as that is MUCH more popular with the masses.
As for the name colours, I think it looks good, so no complaints there. And I’m really glad they changed the Photo system, because I have a ton of photos on there now.

I don’t really like it because my friends probably don’t care or want to see a post in their feed for every trophy and purchase I make. Atleast have the option to make it as one of the recent activity posts. The game specific post will probably not be supported like in-game music and screenshots. You also still have to go to the web browser which i find very barbaric on Facebook atm and i was thinking more of integration like on the 360 where you pull it up like the PS store. They could have probably done something with Home too like having your avatar in one of the box’s pn the side of your profile. Lastly, if i wanted to share all my gaming stuff with my friends i’d probably want to share more interesting stuff like sifto beat fb friend X on MW2 34-4 or soemthign like that.

Uh oh, the PS3 has Facebook now. What else is the 360 gonna get that sets it apart? It better be something ground-breaking or else I see consumers getting smart and dropping their Live subscriptions for free online multiplayer. (Obviously I realize not everyone will, but I’d wager that a lot will, due to the obvious proverbial raping they’re getting from Microsoft.)

I think there’s a couple of reasons why they got it out as soon as they could. First of all, the 360 is getting Facebook tomorrow, so Sony needed to get this news out to people.
Also, I’m beginning to think that Sony are going for constant improvements to the PSN. Whereas Microsoft make one big update every year, Sony goes through steps of consistent changes throughout the year. I can’t say if that’s better or worse than one big update a year, but at least we know that they’re not holding anything back from us until a specific date where they release something else.

I don’t think it will convert 360 owners into PS3 owners as much as it could begin to stifle the 360’s sales and become PS3 sales. People will start to look at the features of both the consoles and see that they are (more or less) equal. And then they’re going to see that they have to pay to access all of these features on the 360 (even features which should be free, such as Facebook, Twitter, or Netflix) and decide to go for the cheaper and near equal option.
I don’t really have much evidence on this, but my friend at school was wondering whether to buy the PS3 or the 360, and (in all my honesty) I was telling him from an unbiased POV. I told him about X-Game chat on the 360, all the games, VidZone etc etc … and he decided that he would get a PS3, because they have mostly the same features, and what wasn’t there will be patched reasonably soon. And for free.

Ooooohhhhh Pretty colors on my name, and everyone can know about my achievements. To be honest, it doesn’t make me like PSN any more, but I like enough now. Anything more or better now is just icing on the cake. I am a cheap bastard so I feel I am getting a great value with PSN. Now, if they allow custom avatars, it will probably put more icing on the cake. I’m not sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for or expecting certain features, so anything new is a pleasant surprise. I don’t say “About time Sony!” when it comes or “Wtf, Sony, hurry up!” when it doesn’t. But I understand certain people’s frustration of these “worthless updates”.

i like the pictures, not crazy about the facebook thing, who wants massive amounts of pointless posts. and i like the friends list tho i think the should expand on it a lot more. add a bio section, maybe some pics. get a clue from the mad success of any social networking site

um, this is a pretty shit update. The Facebook integration isn’t all that good. I would much prefer to have a type of feed somewhere. I would never post any of that information to Facebook because I would just come off as a bigger nerd to everyone. Developers choice again… that means nothing.
Changing the Colour of your profile…. wtf.
They just wasted another firmware.
Whoever thought this up needs to be fired.. Who did they think this would appeal to?
I am pretty sure the last thing anyone is interested in is whether I just purchased something on the store.
Maybe if this was 3.02 or something I wouldn’t be so pissed off.

This update might make other ppl happy, i’m ok with it. I will not be using facebook or twitter but the colors on the friends is sick. I hate those grey boxes. Plus I think sony should give us more options with our pictures. I mean it shouldn’t be THAT hard to let us use our own pics for an avatar. I’d like to show off some of my shit I have here @ home lol. Good Job on the update tho sony. Just another step forward!

Don’t judge me on what i like and dislike about the PSN. If I had a problem I would trade the PS3 in and go back to PC gaming. But I been with Sony since day 1. I didn’t mean anything by that man. I realize that us complaining ultimately gets us the things we want on the PSN. BUT I’d just hate to see us having to pay for PSN because Sony gets tired of us complaining. I understand you, but do you see where I’m coming from? Nowadays, most people don’t want to shoot out $50 if they don’t have to. That’s why I bought a PS3: for the value. That $50 could go towards a game, controller, or, even better, a car payment. lol

I am okay with the update. Im not going to use this for my facebook but its still great. I don’t have a twitter so i don’t really care about a twitter update. And obviously, people are bashing it. When 360 got facebook and twitter ppl praised it as being great idea. Sony gets facebook and its just a crappy and pointless idea overall. Im just tired of it. I bet DLB is gonna bash this too even though he loved that 360 got it.

Sony needs to focus on its online gaming experience and those features then move onto extra shit like this i got a ps3 to play games not use facebook, stop trying to 1up xbox live each time they can worry about other things because their online gaming experience is near perfect.

I really like this feature. Guys who don’t like this update should be thankful that they are getting something. Facebook is a good step forward maybe later on Twitter might come to the PS3. Just be patient. Keep up the good work Sony!

I guess to some people everything is weak. We all know that the one big update people are waiting for is cross game chat/invites. But it seems that anything else will simply be brushed aside and slandered.
Some can’t appreciate the little things that enhance the overall product.

Also, he goes on to talk about the color boxes for user profiles. Really you guys are going to let them get away with that.
I know they could have made these *New Look* profiles look better.
For Christ’s Sake they could have made sports skins with actual real life teams. Ex. Dallas Cowboys, NY Yankees, LA Lakers, Manchester United, heck even cars, music, outdoors, shit even models/playboy LOL SK9. But do yall get what we are trying to say. Here I’ll some it up for you.

tbh this update isn’t that bad. It’ll be good for a lot of psn users but not for me. I only tend to use Twitter.
I also feel they could’ve done a hell of a lot more with the user profiles instead of just giving us a few colours. I’m not really in a rush to get x game chat as long as we get it i’m not bothered. It’s better that we’re getting something instead of nothing. Most people will only be happy when they get what they want instead of what the community wants.

This seems pretty convenient for the social website user. I myself wouldn’t use this but i think SONY needs to stop playing catch up with Microsoft, that’s what they have been doing since launch of the PS3 and its limiting their profit potential.

@donnellz: It’s coming eventually, but like DLB said in a podcast awhile back, we’ll NEVER really get the true X-game chat until the PS4 because by then it will be a required standard for games. It will come for the PS3 but will be a limited feature in that certain games will have it and you will have to know whether that game supports it or not. We won’t see it or in-game music standard until the PS4. Fact. (sadly)
