New PSP Called PSP GO?

Rumors around the net are suggesting that Sony will be coming out with another version of the PSP, called PSP Go.

Now if you guys remember there was a new model number release for the PSP sometime back, it was the PSP-4000, could the PSP-4000 be PSP Go?

Well according to the at1up Podcast they have had some hands-on with the device, and Kotaku has stated.

“The description of the new hardware appears to jibe with previous rumored mentions of the “PSP-4000″ which is allegedly planning to drop the system’s UMD drive in favor of internal storage. With more and more PSP games going digital download only-and additional loose talk of in-store kiosks that would allow gamers to rip UMD games to a storage device-that particular rumor is starting to look more feasible”

Look for Sony to answer our question about the PSP Go at E3.

Download only would kill them because lots dont have high speed or want to buy online. Even the kiosks would hurt them still because it would take so long to download a game. Instead of releasing a newer version of the psp they should just release a psp2 and start fresh. I like the mock up also, except analog placement.

Great idea. But for all these devices that are going online only to have true success is that Internet access has to get cheaper. And with these bonehead providers toting around with bandwidth caps they could kill the gaming and digital movie downloads as well.

Plus Sony has to make sure this device has the goods this time around up front. Don’t play the we are adding features over the course of five years when they should have been in it from the start.

    DSi

    PSP-1000 (PSP Fat)
    PSP-2000 (PSP Slim)
    PSP-3000 (PSP Slim slight upgrade)

I dont think it will be anounced at E3 because they have a list of PSP games that aren’t out yet like motor storm. I think they will release their already planed line up and anounce it early 2010

@troyson its psp4000 its like dslite and dsi but it doesnt ahve umd drive.

@davis this is still psp it just will have downloadable games through psn points, credit card for points, or buying the game voucher in a plastic case as a game that was just released was like. and u can hook up the usb to the psn and download from there too if you dont have wifi :) if this launches this fall with all those games its over ill trade in my ds xD also, there is also a rumur on 1 up in another article that states gran turisimo mobile will be the first downloadable game for it. but that is also for older psp’s too :) unless it gets second anolog nub.

split this up a bit so its not a wall of text. if they do increase the hardware though inside like dsi got a 2x more processor and 4x more ram, they could do exclusive downloadable titles only for this psp, like dsi is getting standard ds carts, ds enhanced carts (gain features that ds/lite dont get) dsiware (exclusive downloable games) and dsi carts( games that will utilize the new hardware :)) we will have to see this e3 :) this is sonys year if they announce all this plus ps3 stuff.

I seriously don’t think they will announce this at E3.

This is because the PSP is getting a lineup of great games later this year. Games like Little Big Planet, Motorstorm etc.

So if they were to announce this at E3 then people would just hold out until the PSP ‘Go’ comes out. That would ruin their chances of getting any sales out of these new games.

    @damonthemoey

it is still the psp! not psp2.

and anyway they never said any of the new games were gonna be on umd… i mean patapon2 just came out and its a voucher in a plastic box to download it off psn.

Not sure that I can agree 100% Damon. What you say makes sense but if Sony plans on dropping UMD all together that would mean games purchased will be saved onto memory cards.

If the PSP Go is announced at E3 with a release within the the next year and a half I would think the choice between UMD and download for new games is pretty close. A downloaded game for the current PSP models should work just fine with the next upgraded model so when say LBP for PSP releases and you purchase the d/l over UMD you can play it now and when the PSP Go releases you can upgrade and not have to repurchase the game.

There are plenty of ways to look at it but as far as gaming on the PSP goes the current models don’t need UMDs and if the future lineup is released as downloadable then I don’t see games sales changing enough to make too much of a difference.

    @ redeagle28 & hellmetal

Actually, I hadn’t thought about it that way. Your way makes perfect sense and I’m starting to expect something like that now.

After further consideration on this point, I guess the games sales wouldn’t really be affected. Though, only if Sony decided they were going to do it in an efficient way, such as your idea redeagle28. Hopefully Sony will go in that direction.

That PSP GO looks sick by the way!

But it’s a bit of a kick in the nads by Sony if they name it ‘GO’. Seeing as they just kicked ‘GO Explore’.

If they are Revamping the PSP that means that this is either the PSP 2 or there wont be one for a long time, to be honest I am starting to thing there wont be one, they might just upgrade it overtime and release new versions, that would be a whole lot better.
