Killzone 2 To Change Expectations For PS3 Developers
Posted by US_ARMY on 9:00 AM, Jan 15th, 2009
Killzone 2 is only about a month away from launch here in the U.S. and has already made an enormous amount of buzz around the internet. People cannot wait to get their hands on the game that is supposed to finally show the true power of the PS3. With this new found power that Guerrila Games has managed to grasp from the system, I ask developers: Is it time to change your expectations of the PS3?
We all knew the system was powerful, but nothing truely set it apart from the XBOX 360 as for gameplay it self. We had a mere glimpse at the power with MGS4 but it still never made the PS3 a more powerful system. Now with Killzone 2, things may begin to change. They have managed to raise the bar on the graphical and physical design of a game developed for the PS3. Developers will begin to see what Guerrila has managed to achieve and will strive to do just the same if not better. As we move into 2009 will we finally begin to see a difference between the 360 and PS3? Or is Killzone one of its kind?

i think a lot of developers will change their mind about the ps3. they will take on board what Guerilla has done with KZ2 and start to realise what the ps3 can really do. i can also see a lot of developers making ps3 their developing system. a lot of developers say the ps3 is to hard to make games for which some people of said thats not true. IMO if more games were designed on the PS3 and ported to the 360 i feel that we would have better games. take GTA4 for example if that was developed on the ps3 rather than the 360 it would have been a better game. i’m not a fanboy i’m just telling the truth

now developers can’t use the lame excuse of the ps3 being to hard to make games for. they’re just being lazy.

well its all up to devs that they use next gen computers and high end tools to make these awsome games and as long 360 pulling the ps3 back with its midicore tools tis might take a while but this is a good start and now as devs will see what you can do with a ps3 then more big company will upgrade to better computing…

i think kz2 will undoubtedly raise the bar, but very much doubt that 2009 will be the year to see the fruits of these developers labor pay off for sony… this game has been in development for a long time… in fact, development for this game started in 2005, before ps3 hardware was even materialized in 2006… obviously it was a big mystery when they where looking under the hood of ps3 then and its a given as to why it took this much time since they had to creat devlopment tools from scratch… sony is still aking for that halo/gears trojan horse that microsoft has for xbox and are funding this ps3 game more than any other game out there… although doubtful, they could have delayed kz2 till 2010 had the graphics not met that standard that sony hyped so much about… now try to put a game developers mindset into context for a second b4 you call them lazy plz… they don’t have the luxury 4 yr development scheduals and have unlimited funds coming in to devolop their games… their has always been more than one video game console and what do you do to maximize profits??… you all know the answer – its cross platform devlopment… what console do we all know is doing best for games sales at the moment must i seriously ask… if making the prettiest game was all that mattered, then the wii would be a door stopper rather than the popular excersie machine it is now… you can’t blame game developer in this harsh do or die business of making games… only the strongest with deep pockets survive, and rarely thrive… and guess who makes most games… its the 3rd party developers that make games for both systems who usually fill the gaps while you WAIT for these monster killer app releases… i agree that 360 will keep 3rd party developers from maximizing the potential of ps3’s power, but as long as 360 is doubling sales of ps3, it’ll probly remain this way unfortunetly… you should probably blame sony in a way for this – for making this system too expensive… its way too ironic how sony and microsoft switched roles this gen… all you have to do is look back in time at xbox1 vs ps2 for your answer… xbox was a system that was released after the ps2 and was way more expensive due to microsofts ambitious hardware plans fpr xbox… and due to being the late blumer in that generation, developers took the road that was of less RISK.. they made money on a system with a large install base that had near xbox level graphics due to highly eveloved and familiar development tools and basically was a system that could sell their titles to keep their game making company a float… what ended up hapening was due to the lack of developer support, xbox game graphics didn’t evolve much and ps2 games ended up looking nicer, in fact many nicer looking games than on xbox… only a few stand out exclusives and microsoft’s own halo 2 where able to outdue it in the graphics depmartment… by then it had been 3-4 years for these slightly prettier games to come out and xbox’s life cycle was cut short due to poor sales… they since then realized that they needed to change their image and make a system that is more practivle/economical and came up with an ipod look alike – not a high end big black box thats too expenisve and out of reach for mainstream… that was a huge mistake microsft made and payed dearly for… they where too amitious with hardware last round and ultimatly lost because “m$” (of all companies) couldn’t drop the price of their system and apeas to the masses… 12 yr old billy’s soccer mom is not going to buy him a ps3 when 360 apears to have the same games/graphics and is cheaper… yes video games have reached out to a much larger demograph this generation more now then b4, but you can’t undermine/alienate the so many soccer moms out there that made the ps2 so huge… forget the argument about ps3 being much better value, we all know this, its no secret that ps3 is better bang for your buck… but the people sitting here reading these posts that own all the latest hd gear are in the minority still and billy’s mom either bought him a wii or an xbox this christmas… its not laziness, just smart business practice to stick to what makes you the $$.. its install base that gets your this $$ and developers will SLOWLY make ps3 games prettier and find ways to make cross platform games better for both systems… if sony can’t find a way to drop the price soon to make a big dent in xbox sales and have an install base that would be profitable for developers, then just place kz2 atop as crem-de-la-crem graphics you’ll see until kz3 or the next sony in-house studio game… for now, just be happy and buy the system that has the exclusives you want that someday you’ll eventually play (some cases your hopes will be axed in favor for the next-gen) and bless those 3rd party developers that find economic ways of entertainaing you for countless hours while they survive in what is known as the game industry… just my 2 cents
