PhotonTorpedoes.com: Why I’m Switching to Sony Playstation 3!!

Wipeout HD on the Playstation PSN network.

PhotonTorpedoes.com writes:

I’ve been the biggest Microsoft/XBox booster for the past five years, but I’ve just let my XBox Live Gold membership lapse and I have no plans to renew it any time soon.  For the multi-platform title releases, I’ll buy them for the Playstation 3 from now on.  If a new Halo title comes out in the future, I’ll probably buy it, but I’m pretty much done with the XBox 360.

Why?  It’s become clear through recent articles just how badly Microsoft has ripped off the public with both the original XBox and the XBox 360.

When Microsoft started selling the XBox 360 in December 2005, I wasn’t going to buy it on the launch day.  I was really happy and satisfied with the original XBox.  I figured with so many of those consoles around, there would be some quality games available for it over the next two years.  After all, Sony supported their consoles for many years after a new product was launched.  That was a bad assumption on my part.  The games for the original XBox dried up faster than a prune.  The Guardian UK exposes the real reason for this in their multi-part interview with former XBox honcho Peter Moore.  It’s a fascinating interview just for Moore’s insight into his experiences with Dreamcast, the XBox, and his new job at EA Sports.

Moore reveals that the hard drive was the reason Microsoft abandoned the original XBox:  “The hard drive in every Xbox killed us; we we’re still selling it at $199 and the hard drive was like $70. That’s why we prematurely left the original Xbox, because the more we were selling – there was still great demand – it was killing us, and there was no way to bring the price down. So in the end we determined at around the 25 million unit mark that we just needed to slow this thing down and just not sell any more, and move to the 360 as quickly as we possibly could. And to this day people still believe we left the Xbox too early but it was purely for financial purposes.”

Wow, that is a stunning admission!  I always wondered why the original XBox was dropped like a hot potato.  Here’s why Sony deserves more trust than Microsoft.  When Sony says PS3 is going to have a 10-year cycle, their past behavior supporting the PS One and PS2 consoles seems to back this up.  The PS2 is still being sold (and sales are good) two years after the launch of the PS3 in 2006.  God of War 2 was a SCEA produced title that was released for the PS2 in 2007.  With the powerful capabilities of the PS3 hardware, which software developers are starting to tap into with this next wave of game releases, I believe the PS3 has long-lasting potential.

What really infuriated me was Moore’s admission combined with the Microsoft manufacturing scandal that Dean Takahashi exposed on VentureBeat.  Takahashi’s article exposes the factors that led into the Red Ring of Death.  Microsoft knew of internal defects produced by the assembly line for the XBox 360, but did nothing to stop it.  They were entirely focused on beating Sony to the market with their console and did not want to halt production to find and fix the defects.  The results of that poor decision led to more than $1 billion in losses for Microsoft.  I’ve gotten off easy with just one RRoD incident, other consumers have suffered through the RRoD multiple times.  Some of these people remain die-hard XBox boosters!  Sorry, I’m out, I just don’t want to support this bad behavior with any more money.

Sony has had its own share of problems, mostly in the software arena.  They didn’t understand how to do online, they didn’t have anything to match XBox achievements, and their initial release of exclusive games weren’t very desirable.  Now with a revamped game store and PS3 trophies, things are changing.  Today marks the release of Wipeout HD, a really good exclusive game for only $20.  Later in 2009 we’ll have Resistance 2 and Little Big Planet.  Playstation Home looks to be pretty cool.  Next year, KillZone 2, Infamous, and (most of all) DC Universe Online look very promising.  I won’t have to look at those stupid new XBox avatars all the time, what a relief.  Nuff said.

I am glad you have realized the truth also. My friend used to be just like you but without actually modifying his system(360). Me and him would get into arguments about which system was better. I could understand that from his perspective that he raised so much money for that Xbox 360 that he just didnt want to hear about how the Playstation 3 was so much better. After the launch of the system, he saw some games and was unimpressed with the launch titles. After a few months, he saw that Sony’s new brianchild gain some momentum, so much momentum that he actually wanted one. This momentum and all the times that his Xbox 360 would break down more times than Henry Ford would roll in his grave, convinced him to actually want a Playstation 3. If he can be convinced and you were just convinced, that means people are actually seeing something in the Playstation 3 that is drawing them to actually go out and buy one.

Reasons why i decided to get a Playstation 3
    1. My last console was the OG xbox and when live came out, they were charging 49.99 per year….what kind of shit is that!?!?!?!
    2. I feel that if PC gamers can play online for free so should I
    3. The last Sony system i had in my household(my brother owned it) was the original Playstation(the one before the box even siad dual shock on it) and it was about 199.99 i believe and me and my brother played so many games on it and had so much fun with it…..for about 7 years!
    4. The controller is the same from playstation so it is reminisent of my childhood
    5. The hardware failure rate is below 5% at lauch and got even lower after that…….Microsoft’s HFR was at a staggering 33%!!!….that means that every 100 xbox 360s that were manufactered…..33 of them were defective
    6. I didnt have a good experience with nintendo in the past (80 dollar nintendo 64 games, rumble pact was seperate and had to be charged…..goes on and on)
    7. Controller( I DONT HAVE TO FUCKIN BUY PLAY AND CHARGE KITS OR AA BATTERIES!!!!), best of both worlds(motion sensing capability and recently rumble), multiple buttons with the best Ergonomics(best fighting game controller)…..very balanced now with the dualshock mechanism that adds a little bit more weight making it seem(but is true) that the controller feel like it has a more solid feel to it
    8. You can make your own themes and get free ones online and free ones on PSN(xbox themes are NOT free and you CANNOT make your own themes)
    9. You can change the wallpaper
    10. I had the psp and i loved the XMB main menu for it and the Playstation 3 has the same XMB OS…so why go to something that you dont know how to use if you already know how to use a certian OS?
    11. The amount of shit possible to do with a PSP connected to it and dealing with it!

Dogzwild2k1 are you blogging for DLB or you just posting a comment. Jesus christ that has to be the largest comment in DLB-network history.

I have both consoles and i prefer my 360, really because nobody talks on the PSN. Talking online is half the fun. I don’t know why sony didn’t include a mic with the ps3?

To DogzWild21: Long but great comment. You brought up plenty on good points.
To SmokeWitMe: I owned the Xbox 360 since it came out in 2005. I always said Xbox 360 is way better than PS3 because of the PS3 lagging online. I said that without ever actually playing PS3. Well a couple months ago I traded my XBox 360 bundle straight up for a PS3 bundle. I have to admit, I haven’t looked back since. First of all, the PS3 is a multimedia beast. I hated how Microsoft seemed to tax you for everything! I’ve bought about 5 games since I got my PS3 and none of the games lag. Even if it does lag a little, it’s no more than I’ve ever seen on Xbox Live sometimes. Choices, Choices…

Oh yea, there is no lag on the PSN. I think thats a myth that fanboys made up. I own COD4 on 360, and then after renting cod4 on PS3. There is no difference, other than PVT Chat.

    To shmuk

Yea there are alot of shit talking kids!!!! But with anything that in total annomity, your going to find assholes, thats just human beings. Think if everyone that posted on this site meet face to face. We wouldn’t talk shit to each other, like we do.

Trust me, the Socom bundle is going to bring out the asshole factor on the PSN!

1.Having no consequences for your actions.
    2.Your in total annomity.
    3.Nothing stopping you.
    3. And you don’t know the person your talking to.

All of these factors have made the internet a cluster fuck of assholes. You just have to find the right people to associate with. LIke the DLB-network, its a nice place where people seem to have a logical discussion about games. I’m not going on the forums of gametrailers, where discussions turn ugly quick. So, to say xbox live is full of racists, is like say America is full of fat asses. Its just not true.

I don’t think there is any hard evidence to say, one online service “has less lag” then the other. If you have any send me a link.

I used to be big on Xbox 360….. till I got RROD. That shit turned me away. Now I have my Ps3 and never looked back. I love that PSN is free, cuz to me it’s no different than Live. Since then a lot of my friends have traded their 360 for PS3.

I think alot of people are making the switch.

The only thing I wonder is for the people that have gotten multiple RROD, why do they keep going back to the shitbox???? Once was enough for me to get out.

    @ smokewitme

i disagree with that cause even with people that have mics on psn i hardly EVER meet people that are anywhere near to the people on live. the majority of psn is alot of teenagers and adults mostly cause parents don’t like buying there kids ps3′s, and that’s fine with me :)
