Sony Update ‘Bricks’ Some PS3 Consoles: Firmware Pulled

Sony has pulled the latest PlayStation 3 firmware update after complaints that it is causing problems with the game console and sometimes bricking (cannot function in any capacity) PS3s. It’s unclear how widespread the problem is. Sony claims problems with its PS3 firmware (2.4) have only affected an isolated number of customers’ machines.
There have been a number of people on the Sony PS3 forums who have described problems with the PS3 update made available just yesterday. One camp of PS3 users complain of their consoles are freezing up. Others have had better luck, but report once the firmware has been installed games such as Metal Gear Solid 4 will produce errors delivering a black screen.

No official word yet from Sony on the root of the problem or a fix. Sony will post updates to its official blog as more information becomes available.
The irony is that the latest update for Sony’s next-gen console was not considered innovative or new at all, rather it was simply a way for the PS3 to catch up with functionality already available on Microsoft’s Xbox 360.
The newest PS3 features delivered by the firmware update included: an update to the XrossMediaBar to allow users to access menu items without having to log out of gameplay, in-game text message support, and a new Google Search button. A new awards system for gamers was also included.
As of this morning Sony has not said when it anticipates to have the problem solved or what, if anything, it is going to do to help out the users with bricked systems. In the meantime, you can see the effects of the 2.4 bug here.

will sony give refunds if this breaks peoples ps3?????
There are two methods to fix the problem:
1) manually take your hard drive and reformat it.
2) pay $150.00usd to Sony for repairs.
Do you know what sucks even more? If you have outdated SKU like 60 or 80, you can’t get a warranty for a new 60 or 80 model. Instead they give you the 40gb and perhaps a 100 or 200usd gift card.
Furthermore, I just wanted to say that the Video of Pixel Junk Monsters doing a preview with In-Game-Music is a lie, as it shows you that you can play your music in game… well I sure as hell can’t yet, so why advertise the game with In-Game music if the damn patch isn’t even out yet to support 2.40!! ~_~

The update did fuck up my ps3 i havent had any problems
looks like sony rushed this update they should off tested it for a while first
i knew it was coming out to early should have been dishe out after the 18th
i was laggi but now its working fine… feel sorry for those dudes…

its a great update… but its some how too soon because there are not good games that support trophys and in game music.
that sucks for people who had that problem, lucky i didnt do the update.
Actually “Athanasios Mastrokolias” they used Pixel Junk Eden to show us how the in game music works, a game that is still not out yet.
give Sony some more time. they will fix it. im playing MGS4 right now and its showing no signs of freezing or what ever its suppose to screw up. if u have a problem with yours, go and reformat the HDD and that should fix it. u will lose all of yur info. but at least its the firmware and not the system. or go out and get a bigger HDD and download the 2.36 one. i just did it my my new MGS4 gun metal grey one and works perfectly. and it feels lighter than the others. contact me if u want more info or DLB. see this what it was, people complaining about not having said options (in game xmb etc) said options are out but still have bugs….said options are not working well but said options are out WHY because people are complaining they are no options…now that said options are out but not working people are complaining about that….true ps 3 fan boys….true ps 3 fan boys who know they want a good system…here me out PLEASE PLEASE be patient…if you are not a patient person to begin with you shouldnt be a video gamer…PERIOD…..(that is my opinion)…like i said before in a previous comment…i’m glad it’s out….and so far it hasnt frozen my system (i played gta 4 just earlier and i was fine…i also played out burnout paradise and i was fine not to mention a ps 2 game!) anyway that is all i have to say so till later!! (well except DLB how the hell did you fill up your list so FRIGGIN Fast lol)

there is a 3rd method if ur bricked ps3 can still get to the updater like most that might fix it when sony releases a fixed update but then again does anybody know HOW MANY ps3’s were bricked and also why did everybody ask for in-game xmb anyways the CONCEPT OF IN-GAME XMB IS HORRIBLE!!!!! in otherwords who’s fault is it? the gamers who don’t know what they want? or the company that decided to give the gamers something bad that they wanted? I see it like this begging kicking and screaming for in-game xmb does not help speed things up as you may notice if nobody complained about in-game xmb then maybe it would be another month before reciving this horrible concept and maybe it would work properly when it came out arapidos I know your upset because you were dieing for in-game xmb and when it came half-assed you must have been devistated but what about this did your ps3 brick? no so in otherwords your lucky what do you have to complain about? sure sony screwed up and it wouldn’t be the first time but look at it this way its better than your console failing altogether and then having to send it back in 3 times for repairs AKA RROD i think consumers rushed sony not that its not sony’s fault but immature gamers who kick and scream wanting this and that pretty much they released the update at an early stage just to get people to shut up and the thing went haywire
what should in-game xmb really be it SHOULD be a type of dashboard instead of taking up the whole screen it should only take up a small amount of space to let you do things you would want to do with in game xmb.

They did NOT use Pixel Junk Eden, they used PJmonsters… I know what I am talking about. One thing that I noticed that he said, “Notice this is still a concept, so they are still in planning as to how they will implement In-Game-Music”…

AND YES NO GAME HAS IN GAME MUSIC not until burnout update comes out which is the 10th of july
i installed it minutes after release… the only problems i got was sometimes everyone in the room got kicked automatically when the room started to reach compacity. that just may be the rainbow six internet server though…
i didnt have anyproblems and theres is still no in game music and i dont quiet get this trophy thing
i still havent seen any problems with my PS3, my PS3 is working perfectly

I disagree with you period. it is not sony’s or gamer’s fault that ingame xmb came out shitty. what you need to do is blame developers because they are responsible for getting patches out, which is why sony gave the developers the xmb codes A MONTH BEFORE so stop blaming sony, they have done what they can for now, its up to the developers to wake up and smell the coffee. by the way, how can you say ingame xmb is a horrible concept? if anything, its a step forward cause at least they are trying to make the gamers happy. ingame xmb is a great concept, a smart one at that. just remember, do your homework before you start blaming shit on people all willie-nilly.
By saying “isolated number of customers” Sony isn’t kidding. It does feel like only a small very number of people had the problem. It seems like most people whose comments I’ve read here and in other sites overwhelmingly state that this has not happened to them. It sure hasn’t happen to me. I played MGS 4, Uncharted, GTA 4 and they all work perfectly. Being that its such a small number makes me question whether there is really something wrong with the update. Maybe it is just a bad install. Afterall, this was a very anticipated updated and many people tried to download it at the same time. Maybe the update timed out or canceled causing a corrupt file that messed uo the hard drive.
It is very suspicious that it only happened to such a small group of people. I mean if it was a faulty update shouldn’t we all if not most of us be experiencing problems.
In any case, I’m glad I just bought my PS3 so my warranty is still active. I wouldn’t want to pay $150 for Sony to reformat my HDD -lol-
BTW, you guys should stop by IGN and check out their E3 predictions for the 360, PS3 and Wii. The PS3s lineup has them all beat. I mean the 360s lineup is so pathetic and lets not even mention the Wiis.
There are so many awesome games coming out for the PS3 this year and the next it is unbelievable.
Sorry 360, you had a great start but its time for Sony to take the gaming industry back.

Completely agree with the pixel junk monster but i think he showed eden.. i only have the first one.. i think there needs to be a patch but as of now it might not happen soon cause of the 2.4 Bug not sure if it is gona happen soon
